FUN ZONE

Our Before and After School Programs
At O'Dea Core Knowledge Elementary School

YPLC has been a quality child care center for the past 28 years.  Most of those years we have had a separate school-age program in a gymnasium that we leased for our "kiddos".  Although we have enjoyed that program, we have been watching the trend of BASE camps in the school buildings and felt it was an appropriate place for children to be before and after school.  This venue provides great convenience for parents, allows us to lower our costs, and is obviously designed just for the age group we are serving.  We are looking forward to melding our program with the quality standards that OCK (O'dea Core Knowledge) has set for you and your children.

The Fun Zone Curriculum

In general, we will be selecting a monthly theme to plan our activities around.  We will be inviting visitors in to talk about careers and help us give information about the themes.  We will also attempt to coordinate our Thursday field trips with those themes.  Our themes will often be science related because science has so much to offer children and is a strong focus at OCK.  We will enjoy exploring different cultures.  With CSU so close, we want to take advantage of all the experts we can find.  Again, we would love children and parent input.  If it interests the children, it interests us.

Daily Program

Cereal & Milk will be served

5:30 - 6:00 Quiet Games, Reading, Talking

*Our Classroom Activities will have a theme each month.  For example, "I Could Be A Geologist" .  Possible activities might include: A visiting geologist, cracking open a geode, visiting Natures Own, making a pet rock, making a rock collection, growing crystals, etc.

**Our Gymnasium Activities would consist of sports, team building games, large muscle games, etc.  We feel this is not only enjoyable but also educational for all the children.

We will separate the age groups from 4:30 - 5:50.  We plan on having the 5 - 8 year olds in the classroom for 1/2 hour and the older children in the gym for that time, then flip flop the groups for the next half hour.

Thursday Afternoons
Also, every Thursday afternoon, all Fun Zone children will go on a community field trip from 4:00 - 5:30.  Many of these will coordinate with our themes and some are just plain fun!  Examples are Fit for Fun, Pump It Up, Natures Own, The Discovery Center, Ft. Collins Museum, Roller-skating, EPIC, and Bowling.  There are no extra charges for these activities.

School-out Days
FunZone will provide full day activities for all School-Out days except the six major holidays.  This will include Christmas Break and Spring Break.  The activities for these days will be more fun oriented than educationally oriented.  These programs are totally optional and must be signed up for in advance.  Transportation will be provided by YPLC vans.  All vans are State approved and all drivers are Group Leader Qualified.

Staffing
Young Peoples Learning Center prides itself on employing highly qualified and professional teachers.  We look not only at educational qualifications, but also at their personality.  They are motivated, positive, and they enjoy children.  We will also try to have a mix of male and female staff.  We plan on having one Director, one Teacher, and one Assistant.  Our Directors usually have their degree in Elementary Education or a related field.  The number of staff could change based on the number of children participating in Fun Zone.

Homework and Clubs
We will provide a time for your children to receive help with their homework.  If you would like your child to do their homework at our program, please let us know on your Registration Form. We will be working with the many programs and clubs at O'Dea that support homework and the other interests of our children.  We plan on having snack first and then homework.  As soon as your child has completed their homework, they can join our other activities.  We will be happy to support the O'Dea staff if they have additional input as to other needs regarding your child.  Let's keep the lines of communication open!

Extra, Extra - Read all about it!
O'Dea school has many extras they have offered to YPLC.  In addition to the use of a classroom each day, we will benefit in using the gymnasium every afternoon.  We may also sign-up for the Library and the Computer Room, which we will do as needed.  Young Peoples has also asked our current Spanish Teacher to work with our school-agers one afternoon each week from 4:30 - 5:30 at O'Dea.  We feel this will enhance an already well rounded program for your child.  We love the cooperation we have been afforded and embrace the opportunity to be a part of it.

Financial Assistance
Although our rates here are substantially less than if we were off-site, there may still be some who can not participate without help.  YPLC will accept reduced payments based on qualifications through Larimer County Department of Social Services.  You may contact them at 498-6300 to see if you qualify.
